This is the first novella in the DeChance Chronicles. Also in this series are the novels Heart of a Dragon and Vintage Soul, both available as eBooks and unabridged audiobooks from Crossroad Press. The town of Rookwood, and the incident Donovan mentions happening there, can be discovered in the novel HALLOWED GROUND by David Niall Wilson and International best-selling author Steven Savile.
Also included in this book are the novellas "The Preacher's Marsh," a historical dark fantasy set in the fictional town of Old Mill, North Carolina, and The Not Quite Right Reverend Cletus J. My Soul To Keep is an exciting prequel to the novels in the DeChance Chronicles: Heart of a Dragon and Vintage Soul. This Novella details the formative period of the powerful mystic/guardian of lore that lives on a secret floor in San Valencez.Drawing on the dark, mystical world of an adult Donovan's San Valencez, we are introduced to his coming of age as a callow sixteen year old, way back in 19th Century Rookwood, a generation before the events set out in the Novel Hallowed Ground - itself a brilliantly dark and gritty Western (in collaboration with Steven Savile). Revealing the salient moments of his past that foreshadow all his travels and learnings of power and knowledge, his partner Amethyst is taken back to a vision of the Cowboys and Whiskey existence of Rookwood, and the arrival of apprentice Donovan and his mean, alcoholic master Rathman.
A portentous meeting with a mysterious creature disguised in human form from Rathman's distant past signals a fantastically taut and detailed episode of violence, magic, dark secrets and deliverance - leaving Donovan to realise his fate and set out on the path to his present position as a guardian of the balance. It also neatly brings us to a first meeting with his familiar Cleo, and the bond they share.
A richly detailed past and the author's usual ease at spinning an exciting tale will leave you in no doubt as to the value of reading this as well as the other DeChance Chronicles.
