Anthony Kim's book provides accessible and thoughtful insights on developing a clear school-wide vision for personalized learning. Rather than waste time with overly specific instructional or technological details, Kim focuses on high-level thinking around personalized learning for "high engagement and sustainable success," drawing upon his professional expertise and other widely-esteemed design principles. I particularly appreciated how the book differentiated personalized learning from technology-supported education personalized learning is enhanced with technology, but can also exist without it.
Altogether, the Personalized Learning Playbook is a great, quick read for anyone beginning to explore personalized and/or blended learning. Plus, the cute graphics make the book down-to-earth and enjoyable.
If you are a school leader interested in moving your school to a personalized learning model, this book is a must. I have worked with Anthony and his company Ed Elements for a couple of years. They are first class and that's saying a lot considering the flood of vendors entering the Ed tech field. Okay, first I have to admit that I work with Anthony Kim at Education Elements so I may be a bit biased. That said, I think Anthony knows more about personalized learning than just about any person in the world. This playbook takes his learnings from the past decade and condenses them into 79 easy to read pages. For me, the best lesson in this book is that personalized learning doesn't need to have some complicated, jargony definition. As Anthony defines it, personalization is the practice of dynamically tailoring any service or product to the wants and needs of each user (student, customer, partner). If we can align on this and the work it takes to dynamically tailor, I think we can begin to truly change teaching and learning in our schools to make education better for students, teachers, parents, leaders, and the community at large.
